According to a press release issued by the presidency, the president hosted a Russian parliamentary delegation on Monday that was led by Speaker of the Russian Federation Council Valentina Matvienko. The president said that Pakistan would greatly benefit from Russia's assistance in expanding its role in regional and global cooperation if it received Russian support for its bid to join Brics. Through the Belt and Road Initiative and the North-South Transport Corridor, both parties emphasized the significance of diversifying trade and economic cooperation as well as improving regional connectivity and commercial relations. The Russian speaker emphasized that her nation "accorded priority to its relationship with Pakistan" and expressed optimism that her visit would further strengthen cooperation between the two countries. For the benefit of both nations, the two sides reaffirmed their determination to further strengthen bilateral ties in the areas of trade, investment, agriculture, and energy. According to the press release, "Welcoming the Russian delegation, the president highlighted the historic relationship between Pakistan and Russia that were marked by mutual respect and a shared commitment to expanding bilateral cooperation in various fields." It added that Senate Chairman Yousaf Raza Gillani, Senator Sherry Rehman, Senator Aimal Wali Khan, and other high-ranking officials attended the meeting. According to the press release, the president spoke with the delegation and "understood the need to strengthen cultural linkages through people-to-people contacts and scholarship programs." Additionally, Zardari emphasized the possibility of expanding economic cooperation and requested Russian investment in Pakistan. During his visit to Ashgabat, he also "fondly recalled his recent pleasant interaction with President Vladimir Putin," according to the press release. According to the press release, Matvienko hoped that the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the parliaments of both countries would further strengthen relations. She congratulated Pakistan for successfully hosting the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Heads of Government Summit and expressed satisfaction over the expansion of bilateral trade. Russia's support of Pakistan's bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council, President Zardari thanked. Pakistan and Russia, once rivals during the Cold War, have recently strengthened their relationship through ongoing trade and business interactions. Islamabad has expressed an interest in establishing trade ties with Russia through Central Asian nations, with the goal of becoming a key transit route for Central Asia's landlocked nations. Particularly, when Pakistan began importing discounted Russian crude oil in 2023, relations between Islamabad and Moscow improved. This move came after Pakistani fuel prices skyrocketed as a result of geopolitical tensions, forcing the country to look for cheaper fuel options. Alexei Overchuk, Russia's Deputy Prime Minister, paid a brief visit to Islamabad in September with the intention of expanding trade and investment opportunities with Pakistan. MoU signed to "enhance parliamentary diplomacy" Prior to that, a ceremony was held at the parliament house to sign a MoU to increase parliamentary cooperation. The MoU was signed by Gilani and Matvienko on behalf of their respective nations. A video of the event that was shared by Pakistan's Senate shows the signing of the agreement by the two respective dignitaries. In a post on X about the signing of the MoU, the Russian Embassy in Pakistan noted that Matvienko emphasized Gilani's significant contribution to enhancing bilateral relations and SCO cooperation. During his remarks at the event, Gilani stated, "This visit marks a watershed in the long and historic journey of cooperation between Pakistan and Russia, reinforcing our shared commitment to regional peace, prosperity, and mutual respect." Additionally, he stated that the agreement established the foundation for enhanced parliamentary diplomacy and emphasized the importance of exchanging parliamentary delegations to enhance bilateral cooperation. Gilani added that the agreement highlights a professional development program focusing on capacity building and enhancing institutional development for effective parliamentary engagement for both nations and encourages interaction between parliamentary friendship groups. Gilani concluded, "We are confident that the outcome of this visit will pave the way for a stronger, more meaningful interparliamentary and bilateral partnership between Pakistan and the Russian Federation in the years ahead." Gilani mentioned that Valentina will also meet President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and Speaker of the National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq during her visit. 0 Continue reading Pakistan and Russia begin joint military drill "Druzbha VII" at Pabbi Pakistan and Russia sign MoU for cooperation in multiple sectors.
